Pros and cons of options beyond a traditional burial or cremation

Traditional burials and cremations are the most popular options following a death. However, there are a few other options.

Traditional ground burials and cremations are the most popular options following a death. However, there are a few other options. Here is a short summary and the pros and cons of each method.

Green burial

A so-called "green" burial emphasizes environmental sustainability and simplicity. Procedures vary, but in general the body is placed in soil or the ground in a simple blanket, shroud or biodegradable container - without embalming chemicals, expensive caskets or liners designed to prevent decomposition. The priority is a natural final rest - in some cases without any marker, monument or other site designation.

Pros:

  • Green burials can save costs like a casket, flowers, plot and other expenses including a memorial site.
  • Supports a mindset and commitment to environmental sustainability.
  • Can support a religious tribute of simplicity

Cons:

  • A traditional funeral offers more friends and family to assist in the planning process and memorial events. Green burials are typically smaller in scale.
  • There may not be a marker where loved ones can visit for support.

Alkaline hydrolysis

Sometimes known as aquamation or biocremation, this is a chemical process in which the body is broken down to its chemical components, leaving only a residue similar to cremation remains. The body is placed inside a pressure vessel that is filled with chemicals and heated to rapidly decompose the body.

Pros:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • The remains of the process can be placed at a site such as a garden or at home.

Cons:

  • The family may not all agree on this method.
  • There is no gravesite to visit.
  • This method is relatively new, and not yet allowed in all states. It may be a challenge to find a provider in your area.

Donating the body to science

Whole-body donation assists in medical research. Medical students and scientists use donated bodies to study diseases, and in turn develop new treatments.

Pros:

  • According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, bodies that have been donated to science have led to research breakthroughs treating Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and more.
  • An altruistic life can end continuing to serve the community.

Cons:

  • There is no monetary compensation to families.
  • Some religions may not permit donation to science.
  • There is no permanent site for families to visit
